Top 30 Finalists in the IHC Art Awards 2019

We have just had the confirmation that 7 of our Māpura Studios Artists have made it into the finals of the IHC Art Awards this year. The standard of work is absolutely outstanding and we congratulate all the artists who entered and got through to the semi-finals and now, into the top 30 artworks, The final 30 are selected from around 500 entries nationwide, so it is fantastic for the Artists and Māpura Studios.

The top 30 artworks will be auctioned off with 100% of the proceeds going to the Artists.

A big Congratulations to Colin Harris, this years recipient of thew Māpura Studios Wallace Trust Scholarship 2019.

Colin is a promising young artist with immense talent and his work will be featured in a show opening on Thursday 8th September at Satchi&Satchi&Satchi gallery in Parnell . Details here

Māpura Artists and Artwork are going to be projected onto big screens at the Silo during the parade.

Please join us to celebrate Matariki and diversity.

InMotion Matariki is a big colourful parade in celebration of Matariki: the Māori New Year. Each winter participants decorate their bicycles and wheelchairs, and enjoy pockets of performance as they roll through Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter.

The parade is created and presented by Touch Compass, New Zealand’s leading inclusive professional performing arts organisation combining artists with and without a disability.

“We have some amazing people who do incredible work for our community, and it’s time to salute their achievements,” says Albert Eden Chair Peter Haynes.

Māpura Studios board member and volunteer tutor John Ferriss is one such amazing person.

John received an Local Heroes Albert-Eden Award 2019 in may this year recognizing his outstanding work.

Criteria included: how their work benefits Albert-Eden people and communities; how long they have been doing what they do; and any other significant factors, such as their influence in wider Auckland.

Congratulations John from all of the staff and students at Māpura Studios.

Stefan Neville & Mapura at the Sonic Protest Festival in Paris

Stefan Neville, Māpura's music facilitator, recently attended the Sonic Protest Festival in Paris. This is a festival of experimental/outsider/raw music practices and as such always has a big component of music and activities made by people living with disabilities. This includes concerts, films, panel discussions, exhibitions, radio shows and workshops and even extends to people with disabilities working the bar and kitchen at some of the events.
Stefan participated in many ways. He spent three days workshopping & rehearsing with a group called Les Harrys - 8 autistic young adults who have been assembling every week at Antony's Day Hospital in Paris to play music together for the last 5 years. Les Harrys & Stefan then performed a triumphant concert in a beautiful permanent circus tent venue called Chapiteaux Turbulents. 

Stefan then spoke on a panel discussion about "other" spaces where people with disabilities can creatively thrive. There were people running music programs & radio stations in Psychiatric Hospitals, Prisons for young offenders and A Self advocating Schizophrenic support group. Everyone was very interested & impressed hearing about Mapura Studios. 

Another part of the festival was two performances of Stefans own music. Firstly his long running solo folk project "Pumice" and then his obnoxious rock band "Coolies" performed on different nights. Stefan was also honoured to be invited to play another concert drumming for "Jandek" - a mysterious reclusive Texan artist who has been releasing records since the late 70s. 

After two action packed weeks in Paris, Pumice & Coolies hit the road playing 18 gigs in Belgium, Netherlands, Germany & the U.K. The shows went excellently & audiences ranged from a few hundred at a festival in Brussels to 3 people in a bar in Cardiff. Another highlight was the Coolies performance at the opening of Auckland artist & friend Sriwhana Spong's exhibiton "Ida - Ida" at the prestigious Spike Island Gallery in Bristol.

Orange Order of NZ Donation

Our Director Diana McPherson made a presentation in February this year to the Orange Order of NZ and Māpura Studios received a donation of $1,000 . We are very grateful for the help it will give our students. Thank you Orange Order of NZ from all our staff, tutors and students.

Freemasons Foundation

Special thanks to the Freemason's Foundation who have donated $29,560 toward our restART art therapy programme for people affected by stroke. This will make a huge difference, allowing us to extend the programme to other areas.

Lou & Iris Fisher Trust

Thank you to the Lou & Iris Fisher Trust who have donated $15,000 towards art materials, frames and screens.

Lotteries Grants Board

A big Thank you also to the Lotteries Grants Board for a three year funding grant at $55,000 per annum toward overhead costs, to keep Māpura running.

Dame Denise L’Estrange Corbet, International Fashion Designer, Artist and IHC NZ Ambassador Visits Māpura Studios

Dame Denise L’Estrange-Corbet took time out of her busy schedule to visit us and talk to every single artist in our Wednesday morning Becoming an Artist class.

Dame Denise inspired all our artists to enter the IHC Art Awards this year, and listened to their stories. Dame Denise L’Estrange-Corbet has been involved with the IHC Art Awards since 2009 and became an Ambassador in 2016, something she is very honoured to do. Last year we had seven fantastic finalists in the Awards, including one highly commended.

The IHC Art Awards provides artists with an intellectual disability the opportunity to have their talent recognised, their voices heard and to sell their work. It highlights the talent and achievements of people with intellectual disabilities.

 We appreciate the support that IHC and Dame Denise give to our artists and organisations like our selves throughout the country.

Pussies at the Pah - Surprise mini FemFest w PussyRiot , Māpura Studios & Friends

Join us for a surprise addition to Pussy Riot's NZ tour, bringing together local performers, artists and creative activists in celebration of all things feminine and creatively disruptive that inspire social change*

Māpura Studios will be taking a workshop creating Protest Placards & Activist Art on the evening.

The Pussy Riot crew have incurred extra costs on their tour due to the cancellation of Brazil and delays on flights due to visa issues, so Pah Homestead is generously offering up multiple spaces for diverse activities in order to help them fund raise to continue spreading their important message to the world, as only the arts can do. With a main stage on the lawn, electronic music spaces inside, panel discussions, talks & Q&A's, film, art workshops and performance art pieces happening from 4pm, this is shaping up to be an incredible last minute extravaganza - only possible with the support of an incredible line up of local performers and socially conscious sponsors. The Pah cafe will be open serving a specially inspired Russian menu to tempt your tastebuds, as we get set to party with the Pussies before they leave Auckland.

It is with great sorrow and regret that we lost one of longest, and most outstanding artists, John Penman last week.

John passed away from complications and pneumonia due to a car accident.

We wish his twin brother and his sister love and condolences form all our staff and students.

John’s brother hopes to hold a combined exhibition of both his own and John’s artworks later this year. John was in the Wednesday morning becoming an Artist class.

Thank you Cross Country Rentals

Cross Country Rentals transport children to and from Central Auckland Specialist School and at their staff Xmas dinner on Saturday night, raffled off a couple of donated gift baskets on the condition that the money raised went to a children’s charity.

They managed to raise $400 so are delighted to be able to give that amount Mapura, as we work with their special children and thought Mapura would be perfect.

October School Holidays Art....

Māpura Studios is having a display of artwork from our artists, showing for 2 weeks over the October School Holidays.

We invite you to come down and have a look at the awesome artworks. From Tuesday October 2nd to Friday 12th October.They will all be for sale, so you can purchase them through Māpura Studios.

In the second week of the holidays we will be holding “Give it a Go” creative sessions for parents and kids.
