Information about Māpura Studios re-opening

Māpura Studios will re-open for in-person programmes in Term One 2022

Term dates:
Term One: Tuesday 1 February to Thursday 14 April – 11 weeks (note Monday 7 Feb is Waitangi Day) – 11 weeks

Term Two: Monday 2 May to Friday 8 July – 10 weeks

Term Three: Monday 25 July to Friday 30 September – 10 weeks

Term Four: Monday 17 October to Friday 17 December – 9 weeks

The final programme details and timetables are currently being finalised and will be up on our website next week but are expected to be similar to past programmes.

Covid-19
As already advised, Māpura Studios is adopting a mandated Covid-19 vaccination pass for all staff, participants aged 12 or over and visitors to the studio or to any other venues at which we work.

This decision was based on the Health and Safety of our artists and our staff, and means that anyone entering the studio or other off-site facilities, needs to show they are fully vaccinated.

We are also requesting that masks are worn at all times. However we do understand that there may be some of our community for whom this may be difficult and I ask that you let either Alex or myself know ahead of time if this is an issue.

We recognise that there may be some people who have an official vaccination exemption issued by the Health Department or its delegated authorities, and we will of course accept these.

We will have vaccine pass scanning capability or alternatively we will be requesting that vaccination certificates are shown to staff before entering.

I hope that the great majority of you will welcome this policy which we hope will keep our community safe, but if anyone has any problems, I would ask that you contact me about this and address any concerns and questions directly to me.

Zoom programmes:
Once we have started back, most zoom programmes will be discontinued as regular studio based activities recommence. However we recognize that there may be some people who are not able to return immediately or would prefer to wait a little longer. Or there may be some unvaccinated people who are unable to return but would like to stay in contact through our creative programmes.

To accommodate this, we will offer one or two zoom sessions (depending on the demand) to a general group of artists who would like to connect with us in this way.

This year there will be a cost for a zoom session, as there will no longer be any government wage subsidies and we need to pay out tutors for their time.

This cost will be $15 per session.

Traffic Light Levels

We have studio policies in place which cover all levels of the traffic light system.

It would seem likely now, that we will return at the Orange level. This allows us more flexibility as a vaccine mandated site and we hope that we can return to as near “normality” as possible while still observing strict health and safety protocols.

The main things to be aware of are:

1.     Have your vaccination certificates available or make prior arrangements with the Director

2.     Stay home if you are unwell

3.     If you appear unwell to a staff member you may be asked to go home.

4.     If you have been told by the Health Authorities to self-isolate, you must do so

5.     Contact trace before entering the studio

6.     Wash your hands when you arrive and before you leave

7.     Wear a mask if at all possible

8.     If you have personal needs (e.g. toileting, seizures etc) you will need to have a support person with you.

9.     Please follow any instructions regarding Covid-19 procedures that may be given to you by staff. We are trying to do our best to keep everyone safe and the situation is constantly changing.

10.  Staff will be carrying out strict cleaning processes.

11.  If you have any questions or are uncertain about anything please contact me.

We are really looking forward to seeing you all again next year to enjoy making art together.
We have some great things planned.

Classes Reopening March 9th 2021

Hi everyone,

The good news is we are back in Level two from Sunday 7th March, 6am. That means classes at Māpura Studios will start again on Monday 7th March 2021.

Because we will be in level 2 there will still be strict health protocols in place. These will be the same as they were when we were in level 2 last time.

We encourage artists to wear a mask and serious hygiene needs to be observed by all.

Contact tracing is mandatory.

Entry through double doors past the sign in table.

To all our artists and support people, level 2 means we are unable to assist with transfer in the toilet.

Social distancing – we try to maintain 2m but the regulations are for 1metre

Covid 19 Health and Safety Protocols:

Information for Students

To ensure that you feel safe at Mapura we are putting the following studio guidelines in place.

These guidelines are constantly reviewed in accordance with the latest Ministry of Health recommendations and government requirements.

Health:

Please do not come in if you are sick or if anyone in your community/home is sick. Do not be offended if we ask you to leave. You will need to stay away until you or others in your community are well.

Mapura staff are required to enforce this provision.

If you have an underlying health condition, you should not return to the studio initially. We will check with you when we call you to ensure that people who are particularly vulnerable, wait until the time is appropriate to return.

Sanitisation: You and your support person must wash your hands on entry to the studio. There will also be hand sanitiser on the tables for your use if required. But W.H.O. advice is that the best defence to Covid19 is washing your hands.

Mapura staff will clean and sanitise all surfaces between classes

Social Distancing: Tables and areas will be marked out in the studio to ensure that strict social distancing can be maintained. Mapura will be adopting a 2 metre distancing policy at this stage of level 2. It is however, also your responsibility and that of your support person to keep within the guidelines. Support people must stay within the bubble of their own artist.

Entry to the studio will be through the main double doors only

You may need to wait with your driver in the vehicle until entrance doors are clear.

Contact Tracing: Everybody coming in to the studio must either use the contact tracer app (by main double doors) or sign in on arrival. Artists will need to be marked off on the roll at the door.

 Other Information:

We will not be supplying tea, coffee and biscuits during level 2. Please bring your own water bottle.

We will be separating tools and media between classes, making small packages of materials for students to use, so that there is no communal usage.

You may also be asked to bring your own dry media to work with initially. Tutors will advise. This is to limit the sharing of common materials.

Artists who have personal needs e.g. toileting, seizures, which may require close contact will be contacted, as they will need to have a support person with them or consider if they should remain at home for longer. Mapura staff will not be able to attend to such needs.

Some Mapura staff may wear PPE but it is not mandatory for them to do so.

PPE, disposable masks and gloves supplied for students if they would like.

Serious hygiene needs to be observed by all including artists.

Contact tracing mandatory. Only entry through double doors past the sign in table. We must note artists on the rolls as they arrive and anyone else, app or sign in.

Social distancing – we try to maintain 2m but the regulations are for 1metre. So let’s try for the 2m , we need to do our best

Māpura Re-Opening at Level One Term Four

All Māpura Studios classes will be starting back from the 12th October at Level One. Satellite classes also.

Most St Lukes classes start in the school holidays to try and make up for the lost classes over Covid Lockdown. Please be patient while we sort out the fees and refunds for Term Three.

We hope that all students will feel comfortable enough to return on Monday for the term.

We have missed you all, and welcome everyone back for some great artmaking.

Zoom classes will not be available from next week, as we are now back in the physical classroom back to nearly normal.

Covid-19 information Confirmation about re-opening date Term 4 after 2nd lockdown

26 August 2020

With the announcement today of the move to Covid-19 Alert level 2 from midnight on Wednesday this week, I want to confirm that most Mapura programmes will start back from next Monday 28 September.

There will be a few that can’t re-start next week and we’ll let you know what the situation is.

This is the date we advised at the end of August.

However I did get the dates wrong in that it will be a 12 week term but it will finish on Friday 18 December, not Friday December 11, as I said in the earlier advice.

Because we will be in level 2 there will still be strict health protocols in place. These will be the same as they were when we were in level 2 last time.

I’ll attach these at the bottom of this, so everyone is clear.

However this time, there may well be some tutors who choose to wear a mask and I would encourage any artists who may also feel more comfortable wearing a mask, to do so.

We know that these are difficult times and that some people are feeling unsure.

We are really looking forward to seeing you again, but if you feel you need to take it quietly, we understand

Fees:
Just to re-confirm you are not expected to pay for any classes that you could not attend due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

We will give you credit in your term 4 invoice for the number of weeks you were not able to attend due to the Covid lockdown.

If you have any queries on fees please contact Alex – alex@mapurastudios.org.nz

Covid-19 information about re-opening date after 2nd lockdown

We’ve been advised by the Covid-19 authorities that under the Auckland level 2 alert system rules that will come in to place next week, 31 August 2020, Mapura Studios would not be able to operate with more than 10 people in the studio at any one time. This includes students, caregivers, tutors and other staff.

Your health and safety and that of our staff comes first and so we have decided that we will continue to run Zoom classes for a few more weeks and will not re-open the studio until the week of Monday 28 September.

By that time we hope that the limits on gatherings will be eased and that the risks in Auckland to people’s health will be clearer.

There are only 4 weeks left of term 3 and given that we can’t re-open until the limit of 10 people has been relaxed, it seemed that it would be preferable to have a 12 week term in Term 4 with no breaks (hopefully) than to start for possibly a couple of weeks, have a term holiday break and then re-start.

It’s not an ideal situation and I know that some of you will be disappointed that face to face classes will not re-start for another 4 weeks, but we will continue to stay in touch by phone, Zoom and other social media. Your tutors and other staff are here to help and support you.

Re-open week of 28 September 2020

Term 4 will run for 12 weeks and end on Friday 11 December 2020

Fees: We sent the term 3 invoices out in good faith and with the expectation that we would be running a full 10 weeks. Unfortunately this is not now the case.

You are not expected to pay for any classes that you could not attend due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
Many of you have already paid your invoice.

We will give you credit in your term 4 invoice for the number of weeks you were not able to attend due to Covid.

For those of you who have not yet paid, our preference is that to save us extra work we can be consistent, that you pay the full term 3 invoice and again we’ll give you credit in term 4.

If you don’t wish to do this please contact Alex – alex@mapurastudios.org.nz

Māpura Studios Re-Opening Term 2 May 2020

To all our artists, families and support people

We have been missing you.

It has been great to keep in touch through Zoom and phone calls with some of you and we hope that you are all keeping well and making great art during the lockdown.

Now that we have reached Level 2, Mapura Studio will begin offering classes in the studio beginning in the week of Monday 25 May.

It will be a slow and gradual start and we will contact everyone to discuss options and issues.

Initially there will be only a few studio classes offered.

The plan is to continue to offer Zoom sessions to those who are unable or not ready to return to the studio. These will be held during the actual class taking place in the studio at the normal session time. We’ll give you all the details at a later stage.

More classes will come on stream gradually – we’ll let you know as it happens.

These are worrying times and we have introduced new protocols for the way we can operate in the studio.

It is important that you read and understand these.

We have put these protocols in place in accordance with guidance from the Ministry of Health, so if their advice changes or we find that we need to adjust something, we’ll update these protocols and let you know of the change.

I am attaching below our Covid 19 Health and Safety plan – please read it.

We will be maintaining a 2m social distancing policy at this stage of Level 2 and the studio will be marked out to show safe distancing. There will be one table per artist and nothing will be shared.

Also please note we will not be offering any refreshments – you’ll need to bring your own water bottle.

Fees;
We won’t be charging any fees for group classes for the rest of term 2.

We closed down with 3 weeks of the first term left. So the balance of those fees will go to help cover our costs during term 2 which runs until 3 July.

But please, if you haven’t yet paid your term 1 invoice, we’d be grateful if you could attend to it soon.

We know that some of you will not be able to come back yet or do not feel ready, that is fine.

We all need to look after ourselves and do what is best.

Alex will be calling you all to chat about how you feel, whether you want to come back yet and any concerns you might have.

She’ll also talk to you about whether you have any underlying health conditions that might mean you can’t yet return even if you want to, or any personal needs that may need you’ll have to have a support person with you in the studio.

If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to get on touch with:

Designer Mask (Sacha)

Designer Mask (Sacha)

This is an invitation to the Māpura community of artists, support workers, volunteers, staff and the wider world to create beautiful, fantastical, over the top, simple, bizarre, magical, mythical masks, gloves and/or costumes with whatever medium you like using any materials you can find.

Many in the special needs community especially those living in supported group homes or needing support in their homes are feeling vulnerable at present due to Covid 19. The needs of our community should be seen and heard. The safety and emotional well-being of our community is crucial and this is a creative way to express yourself or show your support for others in the community.

Drawing from the visually powerful history of masks and costume, create an artwork we can share on social media. Your artwork can be as simple or elaborate as you like! Tell your story, express yourself and be visible!

Create your mask/costume inspired artwork through drawing, photograph, sculpture, video performance, sound, music, dance, movement, poetry, assemblage, collaboration etc, and email to:  alex@mapurastudios.org.nz
or post it to social media with the hashtag #mapuramasks

Credit for classes Missed Due to Covid19

Mapura will hold fees in credit for people who have missed classes due to the Covid 19 outbreak.

We will hold the last 3 weeks (except the Monday classes because we were open, so Monday classes get 2 weeks credit) as a credit for the next lot of fees whenever they might be, when we are back.

There is also a possibility of giving credits to those people who notified us that they wouldn’t be coming while Covid19 was on, earlier than the lock-down.

We will be back soon, and hope that you all keep well.

Are You Interested in Online Classes?

SURVEY FOR MāPURA STUDENTS

We are putting out feelers to all artists at Māpura to get an idea of how many of you would be interested in continuing with Māpura groups but in an online form, whilst the country is in Covid 19 Lock down.

At the moment we are trying to develop an online form that most of Māpura’s artists will have easy and immediate access to.

Tutors will be also phoning artists to check in and see how you are going.

Please download the survey and attach to email and send back to Tim at this link:

Covid-19

I’m, sad to say that Mapura Studios has decided to go in to recess for a few weeks to see how the Covid-19 situation develops.

The health of our artists and our staff comes first and we need to ensure that we all take precautions to stop the spread of this virus.

Today’s classes will be the last - that is no more classes after Monday 23 March.

At this stage we hope to re-open after the coming school holidays, at the end of April, but we will be reviewing the developing situation and we’ll be in touch.

We will be working on possible on-line sessions and we’ll let you know how this goes and find out if you are interested in this possibility.

During this time, we will still be available to answer any questions.

Our phone number is 09-845 8361

Email: info@mapurastudios.org.nz or alex@mapurastudios.org.nz

Mobile phones: Alex 022 0454 391      Diana 021 241 8975

Financial stuff – we’ll give you a credit for the last 3 weeks of this term and hold that for your return.

Please look after yourselves and we hope to see you all before too long.

We’ll be back

Note from our Director re - Corona Virus

Covid-19 and Mapura Studios

I want to reassure artists, families and support people that we are taking the situation relating to Covid-19 seriously and will be doing everything possible to protect everyone coming to Mapura Studios, either in our main studio at St Lukes or at any of the other venues where our programmes are being held.

We will be continuing to run our programmes during this period. We have relatively small groups working together, our largest class is 15 people and at this stage our advice is that the risk is low.
However the situation is under constant review.

307_washinghands.jpg
images (7).jpg

We will be putting in place some strict rules around cleanliness and personal contact:

  • Everyone coming to a Mapura venue must wash and dry their hands, No Exceptions

  • There may be other situations e.g. morning or afternoon tea, where we will insist on this as well. Please don’t take exception if asked.

  • There are guidelines on how this should be done and we’ll be putting up reminders of these.

  • We will be trying to configure the trestle tables to allow maximum distance between people working on their art.

  • Please encourage your artist not to touch others. We are going to introduce a special greeting protocol within each class, so that everyone can stay connected in a fun way.

  • Staff are trained in Covid-19 protocols and practices – please follow their instructions and advice.

  • Studio spaces will be regularly cleaned after every session.

  • If any artist, family or support person feels unwell, do not come. Any person showing any signs of sickness will be sent home.

If anyone has any concerns, please get in touch with me.

Thank you very much to the Hugo Trust, without support like this we couldn’t keep going.

Congratulations Michael Nathan IHC Art Awards 1st Prize

A massive congratulations to Mapura Studio’s Michael Nathan, who won the prestigious first prize at the 2019 IHC Art Awards last night in Wellington. Michael knew he had won a prize, as he was flown down to the awards, but only knew he had won first prize when the overall winner was announced.

Michael is an incredibly gifted artist who works in exceptional detail. His large work, Lost in Space is completly hand painted, mainly black and white. The artwork took Michael nearly two years and he doesn’t use any rulers or stamps.

The artwork was purchased by the CEO of IHC New Zealand.
